Easy Simple technique to keep a Marble Note Book in the Binder

For those disorganized kids who like to use a marble notebook instead of a spiral note book , here’s a good way to make sure it stays in your binder.
Take a large rubber band, and put the back note book cover, through it until it hits the middle seam and can’t move any further. The part of the rubber band that will be visible on the outside of the note book will be used [...]

Class participation and anxiety in Kids

Some kids, disorganized or not, don’t do well answering a question immediately.  I know many adults who fall into this category too.  I remember when my teacher, Sr. Dominic, would randomly ask students question in class. I was so focused on my anxiety about becoming a “chosen one” and getting the answer wrong that I could never understand what she was asking me.  We do have to take into account that this was about 30 some odd [...]

Change the language, Change the interpretation for your Child

Lately my phone calls have been increasing from parents wanting to know how to get their kids moving to complete their homework and studying. It’s been my experience that kids avoid or procrastinate because of feeling overwhelmed by the school work. Many kids aren’t aware of this overwhelming feeling and often cannot label it. They’ll just say, “I don’t know why I can’t do it. I just can’t” Parents become [...]

Bringing Up the Topic of Organization with Your Child

We suspect that your child already senses that something is wrong. She already knows that her grades aren’t very good. She already knows that she is fighting with her parents over homework and incomplete assignments. She already is resentful that there isn’t enough free time. So, bringing up the topic is not likely to be earth-shattering news to your child. In fact, a calm conversation about the issue might even come as [...]

Back to school night

Just had my “back to school” night at the middle school where my two kids are attending. I’m a veteran at these events, having been a middle school and high school guidance counselor in my past life.
I’m always amazed at the number of parents who storm their child’s teachers on this night. This is the worst time to discuss an issue you have about your child. This poor teacher is focused [...]

Try to keep your child bathing at night

Another chore for all children (disorganized or not) is hygiene. Most children will take their baths or shower at night, but as they get older, they may prefer to shower in the morning. Keep your child bathing at night for as long as you can. This is an activity that can delay the morning process tremendously, especially if your child likes to take long showers and has to blow dry her hair. [...]

I’m nervous about going back to school!

Parents have that smile back on their faces as kids are getting ready to head back to school. The disorganized child may begin to feel a bit anxious and overwhelmed with the thoughts of school- especially if they ended the year on a bad note.
Have a conversation with your child about his feelings towards returning to school. Ask some open ended questions like,
How did you feel about going back to school in a [...]

Some school supply tips!

For the moms who didn’t buy any school items yet, here are some tips:
1. Bring your child to pick out a backpack. Have your child try it on to make sure it’s comfortable. DO NOT buy a backpack with a lot of pockets. Lots of pockets make for lost items.
2. For Elementary kids, buy the marble notebook. They’re more durable than the others.
3. DO NOT buy the cardstock folders. [...]

Where to place the kids laundry basket

Many of the disorganized kids…what a second….MOST of the disorganized kids I work with have difficulty putting their dirty clothes in the hamper.  Moms complain endlessly that they haven’t seen the wood floors in their child’s room because they are coverd with clothes. When I ask if there is a hamper in the room, the moms usually chuckle, roll their eyes, and answer, ‘Yes but it’s useless.”
What is the goal of having a hamper in [...]

Preparing kids to change tasks

Some of the children I work with, okay, ALL of the children I work with need  a warning that a change in task is coming soon. If you want your child to stop playing video games and take out the garbage, it would be in your best interest to give your child a warning such as” Betty, in 10 minutes I want you to shut down you video game and take out the garbage”. Five [...]
