Crush It, the Remix

By Debbie • Jan 20th, 2010 • Category: 26th Story, Books

Traditionally, if an audio is done for a book, it’s recorded a few months before the hardcover publication so that they can be published simultaneously. The theory is that the audio will benefit from the hardcover marketing. Fair enough.

But what if it’s non-fiction and the world is changing at breakneck speed and there’s potentially updated information that happens in the six months between when the print book was finished being written and is finally published?

When Gary proposed the idea to us last Fall that he wait to record the audio until December, six months after the book was finished so that he could incorporate the latest info, we thought it was genius.

I love the idea that the hardcover is the mother ship, and then the other formats can be derivatives. Vook would fall in this category too.

So here it is for your listening pleasure: Crush It! the remix.

It was published the first week of January and has been selling incredibly well despite the fact that I can’t seem to find anywhere except for a few tweets from Gary that there’s new information here. About every few pages, Gary stops reading and adds off the cuff stories. Even if you’d read the book, it’s enough new info that you might want to listen too.

Check it out…It’s on sale for now $7.49 (from $13.22). Totally worth the $7.49.

  • this is crazy fly.
  • That's a nice approach...I should buy it just for that reason. It's too cheap though...raise the price!
  • If someone is looking for a book to manage change, it is marketing change mostly. If your in marketing you need this if you want to it all on the cheap you need this book. If need to change the world of not-forprofits, of business, maybe yourmindset then try Agents For Change.

The Agents For Change (the blog, look out for the book current- interest from Cannongate people at Harper)
  • What a great marketing idea, and more importantly, a great way to serve his audience and make his book a living document! As always, thanks Gary for thinking of new ways to market via the customer-centered philosophy!
  • Totally brilliant - I'm thinking more nonfiction authors (especially in the tech arena) should be doing this and in general updating a book via audio rather than waiting and going through the whole process of doing a 2nd edition is SO smart in this day and age.
  • If it's not narrated by the great Pat Summerall, I tain't buyin' it!
  • I'm half way through the audiobook and it's already changed my perception of my brand and how I will build a community around it. Hearing this book directly from Gary's mouth, plus his riffs and commentary are priceless in my opinion.
  • I'm gonna have to pick this up. I already read the hard copy. Lovin' it. Gary V Rocks!
  • Gary has insane vertical leap! What it comes down to... is that he dunks life!
  • As usual, Gary incorporating innovative strategies in everything he does. Terrific idea! Even as a diehard Patriots fan since I was six years old, I'm sending good luck wishes to Gary and his boy Eric Godfrey as they head out to Indy this weekend. Whether the Jets can 'crush it' is uncertain...however, I am exceedingly confident that Gary and Eric will CRUSH IT no matter where they go.
  • Very smart. I loved the book but had no plans to grab the audio version. Since there's additional content, I'll have to grab it. No doubt Gary really is "Cashing in on His Passion". :)
  • GREAT idea for taking advantage of multiple formats and release dates to add extra information - for something that needs to be timely and kept up-to-date, like Crush It, this is simply brilliant. After all, who says that all editions have to be identical and released at the same time? Different media can have different demands...
  • Im so glad this made it to audio book, now i live a completely digital life, all my news, media & entertainment come from an ipod/computer etc. Being able to listen to the book, actually read by Gary vaynerchuk makes it so nice. The fact its got exclusive content is brand new to me.
  • Could Gary be the NEW King Of All Media? He's certainly ahead of the curve.

It's great. Just finished the audio two days ago and I am now listening to it a second time. Gary's moments off script are the most enthusiastic and I love it. It's like Gary is carpooling with me every morning.
  • So smart!
  • Gary Crushes the Audiobook!!!! Great job and thanks.
  • It's what makes the audiobook so compelling, and honestly, when you combine it w/ the iPhone App, the impact is exponentially more infectious. It was a very savvy roll out.
  • :)
  • just curious: how long did it take to record the audio for your book?
