For me, I loved “Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are” by Dr. Seuss, “The Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, “Dinner Time” by Jan Pienkowski (which, in retrospect, is incredibly disturbing), and “Grover Sleeps Over” by Elizabeth Winthrop. Of course, I also loved everything by Shel Silverstein. And, being Jewish, I was introduced to every children's Holocaust book as early as possible. I didn't favor those so much.

I didn't read “Harold and the Purple Crayon” until after we had our son last year, but I must say, it is the best. I also love “The Poky Little Puppy” and Mercer Mayer's “Little Critter” series (in particular, “Just for You”).

“When You Were Small” by O'Leary and Julie Morstad is a great children's book to come out in recent years.

We prefer the ones that have more profound messages, some of which aren't even in print anymore: Many Moons by James Thurber; Hope for the Flowers; The Last Flower; The Phantom Tollbooth.

For me I will go on The Cat on the Hat by Dr. Seuss. Almost all of his works are created perfectly for children.
