Oh, yes! The book mobile was my first library experience. The fairy tales were right behind the driver’s seat.

The county south of the one in which I live still operates one; it serves the county’s unincorporated, less densely populated areas. My county library system has what looks like a computerized vending machine at the local transit station. (Not an Espresso Book Machine.) Haven’t tried to operate it yet despite feeling intrigued.

I totally remember the book mobile! Coming upon it unexpectedly was one of the great treats of my childhood. The very limited selection made choosing books easier and more serendipitous. Who knew what book the book mobile would bring my way? Often a book I would never have picked up otherwise.

Actually, I was almost hired, on a part time basis, to operate the San Mateo County Half Moon Bay CA book mobile… Even took a test bus drive – in traffic! They loved I double-clutched. (Imagine spending all day driving up and down San Mateo’s pacific coast Hwy 1… tuff job, LOL! Back then, it was painted Hippy style)!
